7 important tips for men's health

Taking care of your own health is important at any age – and it’s never too late to start developing healthier habits. Just like women, men need to see their doctor regularly, take steps to manage stress, make nutritious food choices and engage in physical activity.

Regardless of your age or general health, if you’re ready to focus on being healthier, the following checklist of men’s health tips provides a foundation to get started:

1. Get regular checkups – even if you feel well.

One of the best ways for men to promote their own good health is to have a physical or wellness exam every year – regardless of age or health problems. In addition to a general review, the physical examination should include assessments of cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure. Find a GRMC doctor.

2. Make an appointment with your doctor when something doesn’t feel right.

It’s also important to see a doctor if you notice changes in your sleeping or bathroom habits, have a cut or sore that doesn’t seem to heal, notice changes in your moles or birthmarks, or if you are experiencing unexplained weight fluctuations or dysfunction.

Remember that many significant health problems begin as minor problems that could have been avoided or better managed if they had been detected early. Instead of thinking it’s just a matter of “toughing it out,” invest in your future good health by discussing your health concerns with your doctor.

3. Know your family history – and share it with your doctor.

If your father or other family members have a history of high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, or other chronic health conditions, you may be at greater risk of developing these conditions. Your doctor can help you develop an action plan to minimize these risks and increase your chances of early detection.

4. Get some exercise.

Ideally, you should exercise at least 30 minutes a day. But if you’re having trouble exercising, remember that even a brisk 20-minute walk a few times a week with your spouse, or regular play outside with your kids or grandkids, can provide heart-healthy benefits. and relieve stress. Taking a break every now and then to play golf, go to a ball game, or watch TV with your family aren’t just fun ideas—they’re best practices that help keep stress at bay. If you’re having trouble finding space for leisure, look for creative ways to spend some “me” time, like listening to audiobooks and podcasts on the way to work or while gardening.

6. Ask your doctor about tests.

Based on your age, family history, and lifestyle, your doctor may recommend that you get tested.

7. Quit smoking.

Ask your doctor to help you develop an action plan, then choose a “stop date” and stick to it.
